Introducing Stories

May 2019

Hello and welcome to the first blog post on the Talkshow blog. Today we are launching Talkshow Stories, a new way to keep in touch asychronously with your remote team.

My name is Jon Yongfook and I'm the Founder and CEO of Talkshow.

Talkshow is barely a month old but today we are announcing our first major update after launching on Product Hunt about 30 days ago.

Changing remote work for the better

I spent the last 3 years working in a global team with members all over the world with some in Europe, some in Asia, some in North America. This is supposed to be the future of work, but it wasn't exactly smooth sailing.

Time zones made communication a logistical challenge. Real time video calls were often glitchy or just impossible to schedule in the first place due to calendar conflicts. Text chat was an always-on distraction and felt very cold and impersonal. I never managed to put a face to the name of about 50% of people I saw in email threads.

I believe the future of remote work is asynchronous. Communicating in your own time, at your own pace, giving everyone their valuable time back. But I also firmly believe that face-to-face, emotional interaction with coworkers makes for stronger working relationships and a better work environment.

Talkshow is our answer to this. It's a team discussion platform built on three principles:

  • Asynchronous interactions are more respectful
  • Low volume, high quality communications creates better outcomes
  • Seeing and hearing your coworkers more often is better for team health

Team Stories

At our Product Hunt launch we debuted with a discussion forum-like product with attached video clips. The concept of asynchronous discussion while seeing your team members was very well received, but as an MVP it required a few too many steps for users to get started.

So we've radically simplified the product and today are announcing Stories, our first core feature.

Stories is a super simple way to gather video updates or opinions from your team. You can send out a link to your team, everyone records their updates, and the result is this:

The above is a Talkshow story set to public mode so anyone can view it. Try clicking it and see what happens :) By default all Talkshow stories are private, of course!

Use Cases

Stories is such a simple product that we intend customers to use it for various different purposes. Some of those might be:

  • Daily team standups
  • End of week retrospectives
  • Ad-hoc opinion gathering
  • Onboarding new team members
  • Birthday messages!

What's next?

Stories is just the beginning. Our mission is to make remote work better for everyone. If you'd like to get updates when we launch new products and features on Talkshow, please subscribe below!
